Studiecentrum Voor Kernenergie / Centre d'étude de l'énergie nucléaire

As one of Belgium's foremost research institutions, SCK CEN is dedicated to pioneering peaceful applications of radioactivity. With a team of over 700 professionals, it is constantly innovating to deliver impactful solutions across medicine, industry, and energy - earning global recognition for leadership and expertise in nuclear science.

SCK CEN addresses three critical challenges:

Tackling Climate Change: By developing advanced nuclear systems, SCK CEN is committed to supporting climate-neutral energy production and helping to meet the world’s urgent climate goals.

Creating Sustainable Solutions for Dismantling and Waste Management: Extensive knowledge of nuclear science enables SCK CEN to design effective strategies for nuclear waste management and safe dismantling of nuclear facilities - transforming complex expertise into actionable, sustainable practices.

Advancing Cancer Treatment: SCK CEN is expanding its role in nuclear medicine to become a key player in pharmaceutical research. In addition to producing essential medical radioisotopes, it engages in pre-clinical studies and pilot production of radiopharmaceuticals, with dedicated research lines for new cancer therapies.

Collaborating with research partners across the globe, SCK CEN’s work has a profound influence on many aspects of daily life. Alongside the research, SCK CEN also provides specialized training programs and consulting services to support a wide range of industries and public health initiatives.

In the SANE project, SCK CEN will contribute to WP4, focusing on understanding stakeholder perceptions around the deployment of innovative nuclear applications. This work aims to gather insights into the social and ethical aspects associated with developing and using non-electric applications of nuclear energy.
