State Enterprise - State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety

Since 1992, SSTC NRS has been a key partner to the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), providing expert services in nuclear and radiation safety.

As a Technical Safety Organisation (TSO), SSTC NRS is central to Ukraine’s regulatory framework and is also affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

SSTC NRS ensures the safety and protection of the public and the environment by aligning Ukraine’s regulatory framework with EU standards, supporting the licensing process and regulatory decision-making, overseeing safety regulation and implementing advanced methodologies for safety assurance.

SSTC NRS specializes in all aspects of the nuclear industry, including NPP lifecycle management, waste storage, radiation protection, and emergency preparedness. Moreover, it actively engages in international cooperation, with memberships in European associations and involvement in various global projects under the IAEA, EU INSC, Euratom R&D, and more.

SSTC NRS actively participates in all work packages of the SANE project, leading tasks in three out of five. Key activities include: reviewing non-electric uses of hybrid energy systems, analyzing system types, their advantages, and modeling approaches, assessing existing safety criteria for various reactor types and evaluating their application to non-electric SMR uses and contributing to accident modeling (design-basis and severe accidents) using the AC2 computer code.

Additionally, SSTC NRS will address challenges in shutting down power units during cold periods and systematize risk communication experiences from Zaporizhzhia NPP, the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, and Kharkiv subcritical assembly during the ongoing military conflict. The goal is to develop recommendations for risk communication in such contexts.
